Hi everyone. My creatnine has been fluctuating from 1.0-1.5 for the past four months. Does anyone go through this? I am very strict with taking my pills and being as healthy as possible but if I am being honest I could definitely drink more water. I am just very anxious about it and would love to hear from fellow recipients.

  • Hi Megan,

I just got my tranplant about 6 weeks ago. A dramatic drop of creatinine levels from 13 (pre) to 1.4(day after transplant). in the past few weeks after discharge, the levels have been fluctuating between 1.4 and 1.9. The transplant team is not overly concerned at this time as I believe there is an adjusting phase. I am trying to cut back on lean protein and increase my water intake as it may have correlation with the creatinine numbers. Have lots of water.... All the best. Raj.

  • After 6 mos I found my "sweet spot" with fluid intake: 2.5 ltrs per day. This includes Lemon Aid, Arnold Palmers or real juice. I try to do 30 miles a week on my bike along with kayaking and long walks so I need the extra fluid. My creatnine is holding steady @ 1.3.

My team is happy, my donor is happy so I'm happy.

  • My daughter is a recipiant. If she doesn't drink enough her creative goes up sometimes. Even if you don't think you need to, you need to drink a lot if water, especially in summer.
  • My creatinine has had a similar range in the past. However, it has stayed in the low part of this range more recently because I have made an effort to get in more water. This is hard for me because my stomach does not tolerate large volumes of water at once as I tend to reflux it if I get in too much. However, I am taking some medication for my reflux which is helping me to tolerate sipping more water throughout the day. Although this probably would not help you, I am also putting more water through my gj-tube so that the water goes straight to the intestines and bypasses my problem stomach. I hope you can find ways to get more in that are convenient and easy for you. May all this help to lower your creatinine.

    Best of wishes and hugs,

    • Thank you! I have had about 1 liter of water today which is a lot for me and have been going to the bathroom a lot. Best wishes to you as well!

      • Any additional amount will be visible in your results.

  • Hi Megan,

It IS Summer and even if you do not feel hot or thirsty, your water intake should increase.  A recent article from the Mayo Clinic suggests most people should should drink about 3 liters/day, regardless of health conditions.  Creatinine levels fluctuate with regularity, hydration having the greatest effect.  Your levels are within a normal range.  A steadily rising creatinine over a few blood draws would warrant further investigation.  Try to drink more, especially in the week before labs are done.  Good luck

    • Thank you! I actually had a biopsy a month ago because my creatnine was lurking around 1.3 and no signs of rejection came back. I have been overheating  A LOT this summer and sweating more than usual. I am going to drink like crazy and wait see what happens on 8/2!

      • I haven't received my transplants yet (Kidney & liver), but I've had creatinine labs drawn often since I was 2 and a half. Water has always proven to fluctuate my labs and I can tell when I've been keeping up with my intake!
