ganciclovir-resistant CMVHI,

Has anyone out there developed ganciclovir-resistant CMV ? If so, were you treated with Foscarnet? I would be very interested to know what your experience with Foscarnet was like; how you tolerated it, howl long it took for the CMV to clear, how long you were hospitalized, etc. Tlhank you. John

  • Valcyte sis work for me.  From that I do recall Foscarnet - I would think the biggest different for tolerating would be getting IV vs pill.  Which can impact some of your levels of electrolytes, etc so maybe need to be a bit more focused on managing hydration, etc.  AS I recall I believe it was 2 to 4 wells after last infusion for max efficacy.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you for your well-wishes, Kidneyboy. Joan, in my case , I had recurring bouts with CMV that became so frequent my transplant doctor decided to put me on valganciclovir (Valcyte) prophylactically. The result was that I developed a resistance to the medication, and the CMV returned. My immunosuppressants have been reduced in an effort to strengthen my immune system and fight off the CMV. Failing that, I will be treated with Foscarnet. Developing this resistance is relatively uncommon, so patients experiences with the treatment are hard to find. What information I have found sounds unpleasant, to put it mildly.

  • I had CMV before. It can be treatable. I was not in the hospital. It took a few weeks for me to recovery. Make sure to take the medicine with food and water if prescribed. Water and food can reduce the stomach sickness. I didn't have any side effects from my medication.

    Take care.

  • I have not experienced CMV, nor the resistant strain. I placed a link below to the NIH artcile about it for others to learn more. I do hope you get well soon. Please update us on your progress .
