Iron Infusions

Hi Everybody! I am one year post kidney transplant. I just had my 12 month biopsy and all is negative. All labs look good except my iron is very low. I am scheduled for weekly infusions IV for 5 weeks. I have been anemic my whole life. Has anyone else had iron infusions after transplant? Did you experience any side effects? I have been feeling a little weak lately and short of breath with activity. Thank you and Happy Holidays to all. God Bless

  • I've needed iron infusions off and on since before I got my kidney (in 2002). At this point, I guess I need a top up about every 18 months or so. It's really not that big a deal. I don't have any side effects and my neph always prescribes slightly smaller doses over 6 treatments rather than all in one shot the way he used to. The worse part is always the IV, but now I have a port, so even that is no biggie.

    • Thank you so much! I feel better. Wishing you the best.

  • I had to get iron infusions last year due to a long bout with pneumonia which caused some anemia about eleven years post-transplant. The body might have been trying to hide  iron from whatever organism that may have been causing the pneumonia. I received a weekly infusion for three weeks. I did not have any bad reactions to it. I think it might have helped my energy a little bit, but even with the anemia now gone, I fight some fatigue every day, probably because of my struggle to get in enough nutrition due to digestive issues. I hope that you will tolerate the infusion as well as I did and that it will help you to feel better and gain strength. I wish you the best and send you a gigantic hug. May you too have very Happy Holidays.

    Warmest regards,

    Bobbiejo
