I am Interested in Transplant Friends because...

This forum was so helpful to me during the post transplant period on many levels. Medical insurance coverage, diet, lifestyle adjustments, recipes and much much more. Members were very supportive when I was very discouraged.

Which Transplant Center has or will perform your life saving surgery?

Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, NY

Share how your transplant experience changed your life?

I was practically bed ridden. Because I had had a pericardial stripping as part of a prior surgery, I was not eligible for a LVAD. From a cardiac standpoint I have done very well but I have a chronic staph infection of my sternum. The antibiotics and Prograf are toxic to kidneys and all the years of heart failure. The end result is that I needed a kidney transplant. My nieces and nephews (all 4 adults) were tested and decided amongst themselves who was to be the donor. My nephew was selected and we are both doing very well. He started a new job and I am back at work full time.

Share whatever information you want us to know about you

I am blessed with an amazingly supportive family and husband. This has been a long haul and they have never wavered. I also had several loving pets who are now all gone. We are waiting to decide about getting a new dog as we are contemplating moving later this year. Our pet cockatiel, Larry Bird, had to be given away at the age of 25 as my transplant center insisted. Our pet sitter adopted him and he is still going strong as he approaches 29. The Guiness Book of Records lists the oldest cockatiel at 30.

Share your interests and hobbies

I returned to work at a biotech company I love to read (most genres) Watch old movies and BBC mystery series Play computer games (no violent ones!).
