Where did you hear about Transplant Friends?

Are You Male or Female?

Share - which illness led up to you needing a transplant?

NASH - was the final diagnosis. On the way, enlarged liver on CT scan, multiple episodes of "passing out" thought to be from high ammonia, anemia, thyroid and diabetic problems, sores in mouth, lethargy, extreme fluid retention, seisures and more. The transplant was the 13th time I was hospitalized in less than 12 months.

Which Organ(s) did you receive? If you are on the waiting list, please share.

Liver received on 3/3/13.

Drugs, vitamins, favorite foods

Favorite foods are anything sweet or salty. Try to eat lots of fruits & vegetables. Extensive drug list including 4 shots daily with insulin, drugs for rejection, fibromyalgia, seisures, sleep, depression, thyroid, reflux, inflamation. Slowly weaning off some of them. I was taking 42 pills per day. Now only about 35.

How many years have you had your Transplant for?

It was 3 years last March 3, 2013.

I am Interested in Transplant Friends because...

A transplant saved my life. I would like to help others who are going through recovery or on the waiting list.

Which Transplant Center has or will perform your life saving surgery?

University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr.Steven Gray. The staff was, without exception, wonderful. They attended to my every need even with a great sense of humor which I really appreciated.

Share how your transplant experience changed your life?

I'm not 100% yet but getting there. I have had some additional medical issues and now on supplemental oxygen 24/7. It is a real pain and impacts my mobility. I get out more, generally feel better and have a great attitude about life. I get to spend time with my kids & grandkids. I've done some traveling and looking forward to doing more. Drug co-pays are rediculus. Last year $7,000. Plus cost of medicare and supplemental insurance. So far we are hanging on because my 73yr. old husband is working part time but that won't be forever. I have had 2 different skin cancers removed and will see dermologist next week where I know there are more. That is supposed to be common in transplant patient

Share whatever information you want us to know about you

As independent as I can be. Can talk to anyone about whatever interests we share. Still can't drive because of balance issues - thought to be a lot from prescription drugs. Severe diabetic neuropothy in my feet so I walk with a walker or ride a battery powered scooter. We have moved from Birmingham to Metro Atlanta to be able to spent some time with kids & grandkids. Husband & I both retired. I have fallen many times from balance problems. Last time was about 3 months ago, hit my head and required 29 staples to close. I had about 40 staples from several falls as I almost always hit my head. Also broke 2 ribs and broke my arm which required 2 surgerys including a shoulder replacement which does not seem to heal.

Share your interests and hobbies

My husband & I share a love of bridge. It is a game that you never stop needing to learn more. We play competitively and travel to tournaments all over the area. I also love to cook although I do much less now there is just 2 of us. I also love to read. I'm a junky. Must watch TV, Facebook, res. ad newspaper and be informed about this so called world we live in.
