Share how your transplant experience changed your life?

When I received my transplant, I was at the end of my rope. I was told that there was nothing more they can do for me since my antiarrhythmic meds were no longer working and all the drugs available was not working for me. Therefore I was hospitalized and placed on the top of the list. I waited only a couple of days before receiving the life saving call that a match have been found. The surgery have given me renewed hope for the future and the opportunity to enjoy retirement with my wife. I am 62 years old and my two sons are grown with families of their own.

I’ll assume you’ve never been to Tulsa, Ok...! It’s nice but not really a vacation destination. Nice n comfortable home town. Midwestern hospitality :)

  • Thanks, Rawle. Just had a kidney transplant 7 weeks ago so this is all new to me.

  • Rawls, so good to meet you. Like you, I'm so grateful to God for my transplant.  I had been preparing to go home to the Lord. When the call came (It was Sunday afternoon.) I was in Mass at our parish. Everyone was praying for me as I left for the hospital. I would never have imagined it would happen this way.

  •  Hi Rawle,

A real pleasure to meet you. Congrats on your first year!  After a 2 yr adventure that started with an LVAD I'm just beginning to feel like myself again.  I also live in Queens.

    Take care!

  • Hi Rawle,

Thanks for your message.  Your experience sounds similar to mine, I was very, very sick and at the end, but I had no insurance.  Thankfully I was put on the Maine state insurance and I was finally put on the donor list.  My MELD score was pretty high and I received a call that they had a donor in just three days.  I had a full liver transplant in January.  It has been quite a journey and I am so thankful to still be here.  I have two daughters in college and when I had to tell them I might die it was the hardest thing I ever had to do.  Shortly after I told them I suffered a blood vessel hemorage and went into a coma.  They were there everyday waiting and hoping I would wake up.  I have to give them credit for their sense of humor.  One of my favorite movies is Elf and just before they medflighted me to Boston they put these giant fuzzy santa clause slippers on me.  I can laugh about it now, I  told them if I had come out of my coma and saw that I would have thought I was Buddy the Elf, lol.  Thankfully all the puzzle pieces fell into place one by one and I'm now 2 1/2 months into my recovery.  I thank God for every extra day I have to spend with my daughters.  This whole experience has been a gift in so many ways!  Thanks again for reaching out!  I wish you much success in your journey, keep in touch!

    Kathy

  • Rawle,

I pray that the change of meds stops the walls from getting any thicker. Since you mentioned the Bible in your bio, I am assuming you hàve a personal relation with the Great Physician. After I had the heart attack, I was mad at God for two words in ROM 8:28. You know them..."...all things...". The only explanations I came come up with are to help my grandkids learn to eat healthier and take care of themselves so they don't end up like me. 2) Before the heart attack, I would not have talked to someone about Jesus in the men's restroom of a Pilot truckstop. Now I do. No matter what happens I know that the length of my life is based on God's time frame. I will continue to pray for you.
