  • Once you are transplanted, you immune system will be suppressed (though not eliminated) by medication, to keep it from attacking invaders (Tx organ included.)  For this reason, you should avoid obvious sources of infection and virus transmission, especially early on when doses will be high.  Sounds like a daunting task, but it is a way of life, and in time, it becomes second nature and routine.

Some sources are crowded places, those who are obviously ill, even hand shaking and kissing, like at a family gathering.  You are trying to limit your exposure to bacteria and viruses from your world and part of that is dining out and other food choices.  Salad bars, sushi, and buffets should be no-no's.You would think fresh fruits and vegetables would be safe, however anything grown in soil can have streptococcus bacteria and requires adequate washing beforehand (cooked vegetables are encouraged over raw.)

Certain fruits like grapefruit, pomegranate, star fruits and others affect the metabolism of the immunosurpression meds and avoided for that reason.  Some recipients even avoid chocolate!

You cannot live in a bubble, germs and viruses are everywhere, so a careful balance between risk and danger, that works for you, must be reached.  You should check out the Tx no-no's discussion here.  Members will chime in with their advice as well.

I wish you good luck with your Tx and hope you enjoy good health for a long, long time.

    • Thank you so much for your advice. But I have to avoid chocolate really.noooooooooooo!!!!! its one of my favs. so if i continue to make chocolate brownies and cake for my daughters school can I at least have a bite? lol.

      • I would not avoid chocolate, as I have asked about this at appointments and still enjoy it, but I cannot fault others for adopting a diet that works for them.  Confer with your team whenever you are in doubt.  Do not worry about calling in to your Tx coordinator about anything, that is why you have one, it's just a phone call!
