is it fact or not

When you get a kidney transplant, they usually just leave your original kidneys in your body and put the 3rd kidney in your pelvis.

  • Fact. Otherwise you are in for additional surgery, and they won't chance it. They leave them where they are located.

  • Yes DK!

I was informed it is an unnecessary risk of infection to remove them, unless as Cora noted, an underlying condition requires it.  Eventually the native kidneys lose blood supply, atrophy, and shrink.  I presently have four kidneys on board and was told if I needed another the surgeon would "make room."  Let's hope I don't test that statement.

  • Yup. That is SOP. It's usually only in rare cases they will take out old kidneys. Often when the underlying disease is PKD and the cysts are so overwhelming that there's little or no room for the transplant. Once in a rare while too, if the native kidney(s) have a lot of infections they will be removed as well. Basically only if there are problems  with the native kidneys.
