Non-Immunity to Rubella

I found out recently that I am non-immune to the Rubella virus.  Has anyone else had this happen to them?  I was born in 1956 and had the appropriate vaccinations many years go, but apparently this one has worn off.  My transplant clinic is not concerned as long as I do not work with pediatrics/infants and am careful around my granddaughter (when she gets live vaccines).  I was working in a senior living facility as a music therapist but decided to retire after this recent diagnosis.  (there were other factors as well).  Thanks for your input.  Angel

  • Thanks Kidneyboy.  My transplant clinic won't allow me to get boosters or the vaccine because it is a live vaccine.  So I'm kinda stuck.  Oh, well,  I would rather find out now than later be diagnosed with Rubella!  That would NOT be good.  I'm just not sure whether I should try to go back to work or not, and I'm leaning towards just retiring.

  • I was also born in '56 and the vaccines we got then "wear out" in 50 years or so.  I received boosters of all childhood vaccines as part of a work up for a second kidney Tx.  Considering the growing number of parents refusing to vaccinate their children, it might not be a bad idea.  It would be best to check with your Tx team.

    • I retired in August of 2016 because I didn't feel like it was worth the risk.  Now I'm busy with two grandchildren and glad I'm not working!  Still miss the people and the work I did (I was a music therapist) but rather be alive!
